Tanzania has many dogs and cats. Tanzania has four million dogs and two million cats. In Tanzania most of dogs and cats are not given adequate veterinary care, food and shelter. Free roaming dogs and cats encounter cruelty such as gunshot, poisoning, drowning, hanging and clubbing by members of the community. Owned dogs and cats may encounter similar cruelty by members of the community when the owner of the dogs or cats cannot afford to provide veterinary care, shelter and food. Both owned and roaming dogs and cats if not sterilized can breed freely resulting into surplus unwanted dogs and cats which are not given veterinary care, food and shelter hence subjected to cruelty. TASAVO is striving to reach all dogs and cats in Tanzania to help them receive adequate veterinary care, including a rabies vaccination, together with shelter, food, water, and neuter and spaying by TASAVO members.

TASAVO in collaboration with World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) provides both clinical and practical management topics to support members of the TASAVO to acquire up-to-date knowledge and skill which will help them to provide high quality veterinary care to dogs and cats. Training can be through webinar or face-to-face from Tanzanians or international speakers. We are working closely with the Veterinary Council of Tanzania so that our CPD are recognised and can contribute to credit hours required by registered veterinarian to attain in a year in Tanzania.

TASAVO facilitate veterinarians and scientists to conduct research in small animal in Tanzania. There are several areas in small animal medicine and welfare which are unknown which need to be known. Research findings will help to improve provision of veterinary services to small animals. TASAVO will facilitate processing of research permits to Tanzanian and international researchers willing to conduct research in Tanzania.

In collaboration with stakeholder, TASAVO mobilize dog and cat owners to vaccinate their dogs and cats in year basis to prevent rabies. TASAVO provide vaccination against rabies in outskirts Dar es Salaam and marginalized community especially in pastoral area and areas around Protected Areas where wildlife and livestock interact is very high, and high risk of rabies transmission.

TASAVO organise yearly basis dog show which bring together small animal veterinarians, dog owners and animal health companies. This is a platform which helps to share challenges in small animal health and welfare in Tanzania. During the show dog owners will bring their dogs, we will provide health check up, vaccination against rabies, and ticks, fleas and worm control. We will provide education awareness on good management of dogs, with special emphasize on good animal health, housing and nutrition.

Tanzania Small Animal Veterinary Organization (TASAVO) is working with communities around Protected Areas (PAs) in Tanzania to prevent Newcastle Disease (ND) through regular vaccination of indigenous poultry by using thermal stable Newcastle Disease Vaccine (I – 2). Indigenous poultry are resistance to most diseases except Newcastle disease. Newcastle disease can cause 100% mortality of indigenous poultry. Indigenous poultry farming is a common practice and essential asset in rural communities in Tanzania as it provides both income and is a main source of protein to the households. Improvement of indigenous poultry farming around PAs in Tanzania provides alternative economic income to crop farming which is characterized by varieties of risks and uncertainties, such as crop raiding from wildlife, climate variability, and crop pests infestation. Poultry farming enable communities coexisting with wildlife resilient to crop losses occurred due to wildlife crop damage and low productivity due bad weather caused by climate change (shortage of rainfall).
